The serious competition in an English department is for the role of straight man

Straight Man

The narrator’s aphorism, “the serious competition in an English department is for the role of straight man,” turns the department’s habitual comedy into a description of its social order. Repeated during a dispute over the department chairmanship, it also acquires an edge: the faculty’s joking manner persists even when the conflict is serious and consequential.

Comic Premise and Departmental Roles

The line first follows a joke about the university’s chief executive. June Barnes remarks that he is standing on a box because the microphone stand could not be adjusted, then calls him “a tiny little toad.” Orshee laughs nervously: as an untenured faculty member, he is uncertain whether laughing at a joke aimed at the chief executive is wise, but silence might be unwise too. He points out that they are on the third floor and looking down at him; June replies that she looks down on him from any floor. The narrator’s aphorism follows this exchange, making the faculty’s competition for the straight-man role a joke about how readily wit and status anxiety occupy the same conversation.

Reprise During the Recall Dispute

The narrator repeats the aphorism when Finny discusses the meeting intended to remove him from the chairmanship. Finny says the meeting is serious business and that the English department has been regarded as a joke by the university community for long enough. He would prefer the narrator not attend, fearing that his presence could turn the proceedings into farce. The narrator’s repeated line answers this plea with the department’s own comic logic: even a warning against joking becomes an occasion to restate the joke about the department.

Function and Irony

The phrase works both as a punchline and as a compact account of the department’s self-image. In the earlier exchange, the straight-man idea follows teasing that depends on timing, an uneasy laugh, and June’s escalating retort. In the later scene, the same formula sits beside charges that the chair has aided the administration and betrayed the department. Its recurrence sets comic habit against institutional stakes without dissolving either: the proceedings are serious, but the department’s way of confronting seriousness remains inseparable from its capacity for farce.
